Girls' Group Home - Westchester Family Services - May 17, 2007

From the Westchester Family Services blog:

Friday, June 01, 2007

The Rock Club once again hosted teenagers from one of Family Services of Westchester's group homes. This time it was the boys. The boys' group home, located in White Plains, houses boys who are between 13-21 and cannot for emotional or safety reasons remain in their own homes.

The ones who joined us last night thoroughly enjoyed themselves. It was a phenomenal time! Climbing is a great activity that pumps you up and is very empowering. It is an incredible feeling to reach the top of a difficult climb. These boys, who have had a difficult life, had an opportunity to challenge themselves, smile, and also see that climbing is not a gender dominated sport. The women's group again volunteered to belay these newcomers and noted several differences between the boys and the girls who climbed two weeks ago. The boys tired out more quickly on the climbs! However, the boys took to bouldering like a fish takes to water. Bouldering is fun and challenging in that it is just you and the wall - no ropes. It's not high, 15 ft., but it can put your endurance, creativity, and strength to the test. Kudos to the women's group at The Rock Club - you guys are awesome!

Rock climbing can be an intimidating, humbling, but incredibly empowering experience. The women at The Rock Club, located in New Rochelle, NY, were kind enough to share their love of climbing with Family Services of Westchester's girls' group home (located in White Plains) a few weeks ago. Four girls from the home decided to brave the high walls and attemped (successfully) to climb with the help from the women volunteers. It was exciting to see the girls change from sullen and uninterested to enthusiastic and incredible climbers! To see these girls, who have been removed from their own homes for their protection, have a strong sense of personal accomplishment was a heart warming sight.

This week the women's climbing group will be host to FSW's boys' group home. We hope to have continued success with both groups and many more opportunities for us to share our love of climbing!
