Boy Scouts

The Rock Club offers Boy Scouts several program options.

Climbing Merit Badge

This 4 1/2 hour course covers the material in the Climbing Merit Badge handbook. Our curriculum was adapted directly from the climbing program taught at Summit Base, the high adventure program at the Curtis S. Read Scout Reservation, by Summit Base staff.

Climbing location, verbal signals, rope skills and knots, safety, equipment use, belaying, climbing, rappelling and other climbing skills are covered in depth. All the material is practiced and reviewed with plenty of time to just have fun climbing!

The minimum age is 13. Scouts completing the program earn belay privileges at The Rock Club (1 year younger than TRC's normal belay age of 14).

NUTS & BOLTS

Schedule:
The course meets for three 90 minute sessions. Scouts are required to attend all 3 sessions to earn the badge.

Price:
$99 per participant. Climbing gear is provided. Payment in full is required at the first session. Additional or make-up sessions are $33 per session.

Refunds & cancellations:
Refunds will not be made for missed or cancelled sessions. If a session is missed, make-up sessions are $33 per session.

Other Stuff:
Minimum group size is 6 with a maximum of 13. The Climbing merit badge guide is included. Clothing should be comfortable and loose enough to allow freedom of movement. In cooler weather a fleece or sweatshirt is a good idea.

Prerequisites:
Participants must be age 13 or over. First Aid and CPR are additional requirements for the Climbing Merit Badge. These requirements are not included and are a prerequisite for the course.

Note to Scouts: To sign off on the merit badge card participants need to individually demonstrate mastery of the required skills. Attendance does not guarantee earning the badge.

Note to Scout Leaders: Our goal goes beyond making sure everybody earns their merit badge. We also seek to provide a solid foundation for continued safe climbing. Therefore we strongly recommend completing all 3 sessions within 10 weeks to minimize backsliding on the skills already taught. All instructors are registered Merit Badge Counselors and members of the Boys Scouts of America. Finally, 3 sessions may not be enough for some scouts to earn the badge. Additional sessions can be scheduled for groups of 3 or more.

Special information for Scout Leaders

We understand that cost and flexibility are very important for your groups. Let us help by training your leaders and older participants to belay. You'll then have the freedom to climb any time and at the lowest possible cost. Just schedule a "train the trainers" session. Here are the benefits:

  • Your staff learns to belay fast by using carabiners and pre-tied ropes.

  • You'll learn all the skills needed to work with your group, and to be certified to belay at TRC

  • Once certified, you can bring your group in any time and only pay the day pass rate (plus gear) for each child. Come and go as you please, and climb as much as you want!
